When people apply for immigration to reach Canada, they are in fact applying for a permanent residence visa. Permanent residence is a status that allows an immigrant to legally reside and earn a living anywhere in Canada while abiding by the country's constitutional laws. How to apply-Study In UK

Here are some tips on applying for UK education programmes.

Pre-degree programmes

• Further education applications are organised locally, so there are no strict national closing dates.
• Make sure you start enquiries 12–18 months before the courses start, as you’ll need time to find the best course and organise visas, accommodation and travel, etc.
• Contact each institution for its most recent prospectus, entry requirements and application form.
• Send your application direct to the institution.
  

Include on your application form:

• full details of your education
• your course subjects and grades
• relevant interests or work experience.

One or two letters of recommendation from your teachers may be useful.

When you accept a place, the college will send you a letter of confirmation.

Undergraduate programmes

• 12 to 18 months before – research UK institutions and courses.
• 12 months before – for most full-time degree courses, you will apply through UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). You can apply online at www.ucas.com.
• 10 to 12 months before – fill in the application form. You can make up to six choices on your form. Make a copy of the completed form to keep as a record, and send the form to UCAS, along with the correct processing fee. The UCAS pack will have details of the amount and how you can pay it. The earliest date for sending in applications is 1 September.
• 15 October – this is the deadline for applications to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and for medicine, dentistry and veterinary science at any UK institution.
  Six months before start of course – choose which offers to accept.
• During August –this is when conditional offers are confirmed, depending on exam results. For those who have not achieved the results they needed, or who applied late, the Clearing process begins.
• Late September/early October – most higher education courses begin.

Entrance requirements: undergraduate programmes

To study for a degree in the UK, you generally need three A-levels, Scottish Highers or the equivalent. Institutions are becoming increasingly flexible about entrance requirements.

Admissions tutors consider applicants individually, and may take many factors into account other than examination grades. If you do need to add to your school-leaving qualifications, access and foundation courses are specifically designed to help students bridge such a gap.

Postgraduate programmes

Contact your chosen institutions to determine what the procedures are. You should apply direct to their graduate admissions office. Some departments may also ask you to provide samples of work.

Start to assemble information about study possibilities 9 to 12 months in advance of your intended date of admission and apply early.

Equivalence of qualifications

Whatever qualifications you have, you will want to see how they compare with equivalent UK qualifications. The National Academic Recognition Information Centre can advise you on where to enter the UK education system.

Quality control

The UK Government monitors all higher education institutions and gives them a rating in terms of academic standard. The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) produces a series of subject reviews that assess the quality of teaching by subject.

The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) monitors the quality of research carried out by institutions. These ratings indicate the level of facilities available for a particular subject at a particular institution.

Studying in the USA

Students use F-1 visas for academic programs and M-1 visas for vocational programs. To be eligible for either of these visas the student must first be accepted by a school. Once the student is accepted the school will prepare Form I-20 for the student to submit to the INS or to a consulate. The I-20 Form provides information about the student's course of study and his means of financial support.

General Procedures

Students use F-1 visas for academic programs and M-1 visas for vocational programs. The key difference between the two categories is that M-1 holders may not change to another nonimmigrant status while in the U.S. Generally, both visa categories are issued for the duration of the approved educational program. In both cases, visa procedures may be initiated from the U.S. or abroad. The procedure for obtaining an F-1 student visa is as follows:

• Step 1. Be accepted by a school.
• Step 2. Obtain Form I-20 from the school. Form I-20 details the proposed course of study and estimates the financial resources necessary to complete the course of study.
• Step 3. If in the U.S., send Form I-506 Change of Status, Form I-20 and proof of financial support to the appropriate INS Regional Processing Center. If the INS approves the petition, the INS will respond with an endorsed I-94 evidencing student status. If abroad, fill out the consular application forms, supply Form I-20 from the school as well as proof of financial support. The consul will signify approval by issuing an F-1 or M-1 visa.

Three Key Questions, The Same Answer: Yes

The consuls and INS ask three key questions when reviewing student visa applications. These questions, along with the recommended answers, are listed below.

1. Do you intend to complete a full-time course of study?
   
   Be prepared to submit past school records and letters of recommendation from teachers as evidence.
   
2. Do you have financial support?
   
   Produce proof of adequate funds and/or show the financial statement of a sponsor on Form I-134, Affavidit of Support.
   
3. Will you return to your home country after your studies are completed?
   
   Prove this intention by demonstrating close family ties in your home country and/or a network of friends, relatives or job prospects. A course of study related to a prospective job in your home country also helps indicate your plans to return. For example, the father owns a ski lodge and resort and sends his child to the U.S. to study hotel management. In this case, the job logically relates to the course of study.

Students must prove a source of adequate financial support. Parents, guardians or benefactors should supply an Affidavit of Support, Form I-134, and supply proof of sufficient funds to support the student for the duration of the approved course of study. The person signing the Affidavit of Support guarantees the student will not use public assistance or welfare. Theoretically, this is rarely enforced; the signer of the I-134 is responsible for reimbursing the government in the event the student uses public assistance.

Since many students drop out of school, work illegally or never attend classes, the INS and consuls carefully monitor F-1 or M-1 applications. Good students attending academically-respected institutions experience few difficulties. But students with average or poor grades, along with English as second-language school applicants, experience greater scrutiny. The consuls and INS want to make sure the student indends to study and not use the student visa to disappear in the U.S. Students must prove their credibility.

Skilled Visas and Immigration to the UK

Since 28 January 2002, the Highly Skilled Migration Programme has provided talented people with exceptional skills, the opportunity to come to the United Kingdom to seek work. The United Kingdom Government operates a programme to allow individuals to seek entry, to work in the United Kingdom without having a prior offer of employment. The Highly Skilled Migrant Programme aims to provide an individual route for highly skilled persons who have the skills and experience required by the UK to compete in the global economy.

The visa entitles you to enter the UK to seek and take work for a period of 12 months. One month before the visa expires you will be able to apply for further permission to stay as a Highly Skilled Migrant.

Normally, people are given permission to remain for a further 3 year period. If you have been granted permission to stay in the United Kingdom as a Highly Skilled Migrant for four years and intend to remain in the UK on a permanent basis, you can apply at the end of the four year period for a permanent residency (settlement) visa.

Basic Requirements for Skilled Migration to the United Kingdom

Educational qualifications -

this category provides points for those holding a PhD, a Master's degree (such as an MBA) and for those with a Graduate degree (such as BA or BSc). Qualifications have to be to the recognised British standard of Bachelors, Masters or PhD to be awarded the respective points for each level of qualification.

Work Experience -

you will score points for at least five years' work experience in a graduate level job (or three years if you have a PhD). You will score points for that level of work experience in a graduate level job if it includes at least two years' senior or specialist work experience. You will score points if you have at least ten years' graduate level work experience including at least 5 years senior or specialist work experience.

Past Earnings -

this category requires you to demonstrate a minimum earned income in your country of residence to score points. In order to reflect differences in income levels across the world the level required to qualify varies depending where you live. The country you are living in (or where your income is earned) is considered, not your nationality.

Achievement in Your Chosen Field –

in order to score points in this category you will need to produce a body of evidence showing how your work has been acknowledged by your peers and contributed significantly to the development of your field.

Priority Applications for General Practitioners -

this area provides a mechanism for the United Kingdom government to encourage people with a particular skill or profession to move to work in the United Kingdom.
